University of Johannesburg: Security Officer (P17) Intake (18 Posts)

As per the Department of Employment and Labour, the minimum wage for Grade E security guards under the Private Security Sector Bargaining Council agreement is R7,524 per month for a 45-hour week as of 1 July 2026. Overtime is paid at 1.5 times the normal rate for hours exceeding 45 per week, up to 15 hours. Employees receive an additional 10% housing allowance of R752 monthly.

The Private Security Industry Regulatory Authority requires a minimum Grade 10 certificate, being at least 18 years old, a clear criminal record, and completion of a 120-hour security training course for Grade E registration. No prior experience is needed for entry-level Grade E positions. Applicants must pass a competency evaluation and medical fitness test.

The Department of Home Affairs states that security guard work requires a General Work Visa, as visitor visas prohibit employment. Foreigners must have a job offer from a PSiRA-registered company and prove no suitable South African candidate exists. Processing takes 8-10 weeks and costs R1,520 application fee.

PSiRA requires certified copies of your ID or valid work permit, Grade 10 certificate, training certificate, two passport photos, medical certificate, and proof of payment of R380 registration fee. Fingerprints and criminal clearance from SAPS are mandatory. Registration is valid for 2 years and renewable online.
