Experienced plumbers with trade certificates earn up to R35,200 monthly in urban areas like Gauteng. These figures exclude bonuses averaging R4,500 annually.

The Department of Home Affairs requires a Critical Skills Work Visa for plumbers listed on the 2026 Critical Skills List, valid for up to 5 years. Applicants must submit a job offer, SAQA-verified qualifications, and proof of 3 years experience; processing takes 8-10 weeks and costs R1,520. General Work Visas are for non-critical skills but require Labour Market Testing.

The Quality Council for Trades and Occupations mandates a National Certificate: Plumbing (NQF Level 4) and a successful trade test for artisan status, requiring 3 years apprenticeship under a qualified mentor. Matric with Mathematics and Science is the minimum entry for training programmes starting January 2026. Over 12,500 plumbers were registered as artisans in 2025.
